We all know that fruit is healthy, but IF Magazine has revealed a shocking fact for you. Fruit in large quantities causes problems!
Can too much fruit be unhealthy?
"Definitely can," replies German physician Karsten Lekutat (Carsten).
Fruit contains fructose, which is why it is so delicious and sweet.
"Fructose is sugar after all, with all the problems that result from too much sugar," Karsten adds.
One apple makes us healthy, but three often results in fatty liver, he explains.
When the liver becomes fat, most assume it is due to alcohol. In fact, Lekutat says, in 20 to 30 percent of cases it has nothing to do with alcohol, but is due to too much fructose.
So you should only eat vegetables?
- No. I would be happy if many of my patients ate more fruit "because generally people eat too little of it. Bananas, apples, plums have much more sugar than oranges or wild fruits," explains nutritionist Antje Gahl.
She recommends five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Vegetables are given priority. For example, two pieces of fruit, three vegetables.
It doesn't matter how the fruit is consumed.
- Fresh fruit is better than processed - Lekutat notes, adding that the fruit juice is high in concentration and reaches the bloodstream faster.
This is why Dr. Lekutat is not a fan of orange juice in the morning.
- When you look at all the ingredients, you probably wouldn't eat that much fruit in one meal. But in liquid form it happens very quickly - says Gahl.
