How people become addicted to the solarium

The combination of depression and genetic risk factors can boost solarium addiction, suggests a study by US scientists at Georgetown University.

The new findings are the result of an analysis of data collected from almost 300 respondents between the ages of 18 and 30 years.

A doubling of the risk of solarium addiction was observed in study participants who had gene mutations associated with the regulation of dopamine activity. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in the brain's pleasure and reward system, the researchers said. According to US data, tanning salons are responsible for about 10 percent of skin cancer cases.
